One of the greatest hopes of every parent is to be able to raise their children well. Who would not want to see their kids grow up able to conquer the world, right? As your teens undergo this crucial phase in their lives a.k.a adulthood, here are some of the most important lessons to know if you want to raise empowered kids:

1. Goal-setting

As you envision your children to be the best they can be, it’s also important that they take active roles in achieving something good for themselves. Goal-setting gives your teen a sense of purpose and helps them focus and make better decisions. Sure, your child can have big dreams like “getting straight As in senior high” or “saving enough money to buy a gadget.” But without the right planning and action, they might lose their motivation. On the other hand, kids are able to accomplish their goals and have a sense of satisfaction when they have strategic steps in reaching their goals.

2. Self-confidence

Self-confidence is how you feel about your abilities. It is the belief that you will succeed at a certain task or situation. As your teen continues to deal with various issues and changes in their life, their confidence may be tested.

Low confidence may hinder your kid from reaching their full potential while overconfidence can make them have unrealistic expectations. Having the right confidence equips your child in making sound and informed life decisions.

Supporting their aspirations and helping them cope with their mistakes are just some of the ways to foster positive self-confidence in your child.

3. Self-esteem

Self-esteem refers to how kids value themselves. Compared with self-confidence, your child may have the confidence to lead a group or speak in front of many people; yet at the same time, still think negatively about themselves. An important point parents must impart their teens is how to understand themselves as individuals who have value and purpose. This will help them love themselves more and develop positive values as they grow.

4. Good decision-making

As your teenagers undergo this crucial phase in their lives, they are also faced with a number of decisions that could either make or break them. From simple situations like having to choose between two brands of apparel to bigger life decisions such as deciding which course to take in college. Good decision skills can set them up for success later in life.

5. Money Management

Teaching kids how to manage their finances is one of the most important lessons you can impart them as they grow. The earlier your teen learns about money, entrepreneurship, debt, savings and investment, as well as taxes, the more equip they are in making financial decisions. As one of the basics, don’t forget to teach them this golden rule: Salary – Savings = Expenses!

6. Emotion Management

As your child undergoes series of physical, mental, and hormonal changes, their emotions experience a lot of changes too. With other factors like school pressure, peers, and social media, teaching your kids how to control their emotions is important. It doesn’t mean that they need to keep their emotions inside, as repressed emotions can bring negative impact on their emotional health. Instead, learning to recognize and accept their feelings is the first step to develop their emotion management skills. It’s essential that your kids know that all emotions are okay. It’s okay to feel upset or it’s okay to feel angry. But what’s important is that they think through the actions they will take about these emotions.

7. Social awareness

In this digital era where almost everyone and everything can be accessed through social media and internet, raising empowered kids also mean raising socially aware kids. Guide your teenagers your how to respect and value individual differences. This will help them develop better connections and forge meaningful and lasting relationships as they grow up.

Encouraging your teen’s interests, practicing respectful assertiveness, developing social skills and practicing compassion are just some of the effective ways you can try to raise their social awareness.

8. Resilience

Whether your child is transitioning from junior to senior high or senior high to college, teenage and adult life will always be coupled with various stresses and challenges along the way. Final exams, project deadlines, encountering bullies, or even receiving low or failed class remarks may give them hurt occasionally. But what helps your child face these inevitable challenges is resilience.

Resilient kids grow up as resilient adults who could thrive at any pressures life will put on them. Aside from this, resilience helps your teens solve problems wisely. It also helps them face tough situations and strive to find good solutions.

How do empowered kids learn resilience? Let them explore, refrain from overprotecting or spoon feeding them and let them learn from their mistakes.

9. Time-management

It may be easy for your teenager to think that it’s fine to wait for a few more days or until the power of cramming kicks in before they do their projects. But procrastination can be a serious problem once they grow up. Teaching your kids proper time management helps them get their work done, but more importantly, it increases their discipline whether it’s at school or at work.

10. Independence

One common trait that empowered kids share is independence. As a parent, you need to guide your child in mastering the skills that will enable them to be fully independent in adulthood. While it’s normal for teenagers to seek freedom and do things by themselves, it’s vital that they know their responsibilities and boundaries. Allow your children to hone this skill by giving them responsibilities at home like helping in the kitchen or other household chores and make sure they feel accountable for their own decisions.
