3 Ways You Can Do a Wellness Check-In

Wellness means different things for everybody. It could mean being on top of your to-do list, so you’d have a proper rest time afterward. It could mean cooking food instead of ordering take out. Or it could mean hitting the snooze button on your alarm, in recognition that you might need more sleep in order to function well throughout the day.
Whatever wellness means and however it manifests in your life, one thing is absolute: wellness needs maintenance. And one of the best ways to make wellness a mainstay in your life is to do a wellness check-in.
If you’re already thinking: “Oh no, now I have to add ‘wellness check-in’ in my ever-growing to-do list?” Nuh-uh. You might be surprised how easy it is to carve out a slice of time in your day to assess your current physical, mental, and emotional state. To help you in your wellness journey, here are three questions to ask yourself during your own wellness check-in.
1. How do I really feel today?
You know how a lot of our family and friends make How are you? sound like a throwaway question because they ask it all the time? Well, if you’re going to do a wellness check for yourself, now’s the time to get honest. Sit down, take a few deep breaths, and once you’re ultra-focused on your breathing, ask yourself mentally (or loudly): How do I really feel?
Being honest with ourselves and how we really feel makes way for a deeper emotional connection. And if we’re connected emotionally with ourselves, we are more peaceful and aware of our feelings and our surroundings. It’s also found that people who are more vulnerable to themselves have better external relationships compared to people who are afraid to get vulnerable, even with their own selves. So the next time you feel disconnected from yourself during a hectic day, check in and ask this really simple yet hard-hitting question. And answer it truthfully.
2. What am I struggling with?
When you’re cooped up in a lot of deadlines and overwhelmed with deliverables, either for school or for work, it’s hard to recognize areas in your life you might be struggling with. And it’s high time you do a wellness check. Get a pen and paper and evaluate the things in your life you may be struggling with—from the simplest things like replying to messages to the difficult life stuff such as dealing with heartbreak or grief.
Recognizing the things you’re struggling with opens up a lot of emotional vulnerability on your end and the realization that even though you might have it all together, it’s still important to assess the areas you’re struggling with. And, just maybe, you might want to consider asking for help from your support system or a mental health professional. It all starts through your recognition!
3. What’s one thing I can do right now to feel well?
Checking in isn’t just a passive activity. It involves implementing changes to your current situation that will ultimately help shift your physical, mental, or emotional state. After completing the two aforementioned wellness checks, the last thing to do is to find even just one thing that you can do at the moment to help shift your emotion from negative or stressful to a more positive and uplifting one.
Say you’re overwhelmed by overlapping deadlines, one thing you can do to shift the current situation is to consider making a to-do list and ticking off the smallest task that you can do to have that sense of progress.
Checking in on our physical, mental, and emotional well-being helps keep us in tune with what’s going on so we don’t unnecessarily lash out due to stress or pressure or, in the long term, experience burnout.
