4 Life Lessons We Learned From Watching These Holiday Movies

It’s officially Christmas break!
That means no more all-nighters to finish your research paper or review for the finals exam. Congrats! Instead, there’d probably be all-nighters for some long-overdue movie marathon. You know we’re right. What are your favorite titles lately?
With Christmas around the corner, gathering the family or barkada for a good holiday movie seems like the perfect plan. Let’s get you excited with lessons we’ve realized after watching 130 minutes of holiday goodness… or more. Who knows, you can also share with us your thoughts after your own movie marathon!
1. Gifts aren’t actually that important.
“Just remember, the true spirit of Christmas lies in your heart.” — Polar Express (2004)
Don’t get us wrong. We love gifts! We love giving and receiving gifts, but we also love the idea of putting more importance on the person than the gift. A lot of times people get stressed over finding the perfect gifts for their loved ones. But always keep in mind that more than finding the ‘perfect’ present, it’s key to express gratitude for the people around you. So whether that be a heartfelt letter or an item that reminds you of the person, wrap it in gratitude! It makes all the difference.
2. Appreciate the small moments during the holidays.
“If you look for it, I’ve got a sneaky feeling that you’ll find that love is actually all around.” — Love Actually (2003)
Have you ever taken a step back amidst a family gathering or barkada hangout, and find yourself wishing you can freeze that moment? Sometimes, it’s those little moments that bring out the biggest feelings in our heart. It’s the warmth this holiday season brings. From starting a conversation with your little cousin to asking a friend how their year went, make it count! It may not seem grand, but they act as small, crucial moments of love and appreciation you’re carry for a long time.
3. Kindness should extend past the holidays.
“It’s Christmas Eve. It’s the one night of the year when we all act a little nicer, we smile a little easier, we cheer a little more. For a couple of hours out of the whole year we are the people that we always hoped we would be.” — Scrooged (1988)
We’re not sure what’s with the December air, but it’s fact that people are generally more loving and giving at this time of the year. We guess you can say the Christmas spirit is real! While warmth is a hallmark this season, let’s be intentional in extending it beyond the festivities. After all, being a wonderful human being shouldn’t be limited to the ‘-ber’ months.
So go ahead and take the time to thank the custodians at your school, clean up after when eating out, and thank the person that holds the door for you. Or better yet, open the door for someone else. Take little acts of kindness, and use them to contribute positively to your community. Not just this holiday but all-year around.
4. Welcome adventure and spontaneity.
“That’s what Christmas memories are made from, they’re not planned, they’re not scheduled, nobody puts them in their Blackberry, they just happen.” — Deck The Halls (2006)
Uncertainty is scary. It must be the reason why people fear change so much. But aren’t those unplanned moments that impact us the most? When adventure and spontaneity knock on your door, have the courage to let them in. Like most things in life, memorable experiences often come from the least expected places. And it’s in being open to them (yet still smart about it) that counts. Go for it!
