One of the emerging fields in today’s society is Global Health. It’s defined as the “area of study, research, and practice that places a priority on improving health and achieving equity in health for all people worldwide.” Don’t confuse it with Public Health, which is more focused on the science and practice of disease control and promoting our quality of life.
Global health doesn’t only encompass the study of medicine we know. There is also an emphasis on transnational health issues and solutions. It incorporates other disciplines beyond the medical field that’s familiar to us. A program of study under Global Health offers a variety of interdisciplinary courses that discuss the implications of healthcare on a worldwide scale.
Interested in making a world of a difference? Maybe you want to dip your feet into this field of study? Then here are five examples of courses offered under the Global Health major!
Healthcare and Medical Economics
Part of global health means putting healthcare issues in the economic context. So Healthcare and Medical Economics steps in to make the connection between health-related issues and a country’s economics.
This includes studying the efficiency of the production and consumption of medicine and healthcare. Overall, this course aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the behavior of individuals, healthcare providers, private and public sectors, and the government through applying economic theories.
Global Climate Change
It’s crucial to understand the ever-changing environment we live in. Particularly now that problems on land and water are affecting citizens’ health worldwide. Climate change poses different health risks now. According to the WHO, it affects “the social and environmental determinants of health, namely clean air, safe drinking water, sufficient food, and secure shelter.”
In fact, some diseases such as malaria, are heavily influenced by our climate. Between 2030 and 2050, WHO estimates 250,000 additional deaths per year due to climate-caused malnutrition, malaria, and heat stress to name a few.
Comparative Healthcare Systems
Comparative Healthcare Systems explores issues tied to healthcare access in the different parts of the globe. It covers the study of different factors from affordability, patient rights, technological advancement, aging population, and even trends in the employment of medical professionals. It aims to compare and contrast the strengths and weaknesses of different systems to fully understand what does and doesn’t work.
Microbes and Society
This course is an introduction to the role of microbes—that is, organisms too small for us to see—in our lives. Microbes, also known as microorganisms, are bacteria that cause disease and infection. This course tackles the impact of microbes in the environment, from agriculture and food production, drug development, to waste management. It also provides an overview of the part microbes play in diseases and their prevention.
In a diverse discipline such as global health, you’ll need to understand how the world has come to be. That’s why studying International Relations is crucial. Many parts of the world have little to no access to basic healthcare, particularly vaccines.
International Relations deals with theoretical perspectives and the roles of international and NGOs, such as the World Health Organization (WHO). Here, you’ll deal with the health impacts brought about by prevalent issues such as terrorism, human trafficking, and globalization, just to name a few.
Global Health is becoming one of the most in-demand fields today. Interdisciplinary perspectives are needed to fully understand the bigger picture of society’s health and well-being.
