5 Things That Video Games Can Teach Us About Goal-Setting
Mar 05, 2021
Ayan kasi, kakacomputer mo kasi!
Gamers and video game lovers can relate for sure. In fact, we’ve probably heard our parents say this to us on more than one occasion. Even during a pandemic that has forced us to stay home, we’re still expected to be doing more “productive” and “useful” things that will actually help us “learn”.
Well, if you’re tired of hearing that “video games don’t teach you anything”, then today is your day for vindication.
Sure, video games may be an escape from reality for us, where we get to forget about the world around us for a little while. But that doesn’t mean that they can’t teach us anything about the real world.
Here are some valuable lessons video games teach us about achieving our goals, that we can take with us long after life goes back to normal:
1. Never take the little things for granted.
No one starts a video game by playing the final boss right away. For one thing, you’ll just get smoked instantly, and where’s the fun in that?
Part of the fun of playing video games are the daily quests and missions that you have to go on to earn points and level up. Sure, you may think of them as a boring waste of time, but these equip you with the skills you need to defeat that final boss. Without going through the small-time missions, you won’t be able to succeed in the ones that really count.
The same applies in real life. Don’t ever take the small details and experiences for granted. You never know how much they could end up helping you down the road.
2. Planning is everything.
When you’re about to conduct a raid, or rescue the princess from the castle, or slay the dragon, you need a plan.
Unless you’re fully prepared and you know exactly what to do, you can’t expect to succeed. That’s why you need to seriously think about each move you make in a video game. Without a plan, you won’t have the slightest idea of how to accomplish your end goal.
This is true for just about anything else in the real world. If you want to achieve something, you have to know what it takes to get there, and then you have to figure out just how you’re going to get it. That’s why it’s important to always have a plan when faced with important decisions. This way, you give yourself the best chance at success.
3. Trust the process.
Have you ever encountered a level that you just couldn’t seem to get out of? Or a boss that you just couldn’t defeat? Or reached a point in a game where you just don’t know what to do next?
Don’t worry. Even the best of us struggle at times. But they always keep moving forward. They use each setback as a learning experience to help them get better in the future. Learning is a process, and the best thing you can do is to trust that learning process.
Setbacks and struggles are not just limited to the video game world. Everyone deals with these in one way or another. What is important is knowing how to get back up again and keep going in pursuit of your goals.
4. Try a new perspective.
You’ve repeated the same level over and over again. You’ve spent hours finding that key clue. You’ve lost who-knows-how-many lives already. But you still come up short of your target. Ano ang kulang?
Many times in life, you’ve probably felt the exact same way. It’s like you’ve tried everything possible but nothing seems to be working, and you end up no closer to reaching your goals than before.
In such cases, the best thing to do is take a step back and try to identify what you’re not seeing. Perhaps, as you were swept up in the action, there was something that you overlooked. Maybe what you’re looking for has been right in front of you all along, but you never noticed. It’s possible that all you needed was to slow down and see your situation a little bit differently.
In both video games and life, a little break and a fresh perspective could do everyone some good now and then.
5. There is always tomorrow.
Any gamer knows the feeling of staying up way too late trying to get to the next level. You think that this is the only shot you have, so you might as well give it everything you’ve got right now.
But when you wake up late the next morning after way too little sleep, ano na?
Life does not come to an end after one day, or one level, or one campaign. There will always still be a tomorrow that you have to look forward to. So every time you set a goal, you must also think of what comes next.
Maybe you’ll have a new dream – or another boss to slay or campaign to conquer. But whatever happens, know that tomorrow is another day for you to go through and experience. Kind of like a video game.
