6 Fun Facts About The Polytechnic University of the Philippines

Ever wondered what the Polytechnic University of the Philippines is all about? You’ve got to pass their PUPCET to get in, for one. PUP boasts a lot of history and excellent education, too! It doesn’t do justice at all to keep these fun facts to our iskos and iskas. Here are 6 things you probably didn’t know about the Polytechnic University of the Philippines!

Polytechnic University of the Philippines is the largest university, population-wise

Yeah, you read that right! With over 70,000 students, PUP has the largest student population in the Philippines. Even more, this state university beats the University of the Philippines, which has over 60,000 students.

Founded in 1904, it’s the first state university in the Philippines

What started off as Manila Business School in 1904 changed over time into what we know now as the Polytechnic University of the Philippines. That’s why this university is known in the fields of business, banking and finance, public service, and media. PUP has been making its name for over a century!

 

The fabled Edukasyong Dose Pesos

Tuition fees all over Metro Manila universities are nothing to joke about. But in PUP? It’s at PHP 12.00 per unit. That’s roughly PHP 200.00 per semester. Don’t be fooled by the price, however. You get more than what you pay for. The school produces top graduates, first-time hires, and especially board exam passers!

There are 21 PUP campuses all over Luzon

To give access to students from senior high to postgraduate levels, Polytechnic University of the Philippines has 21 campuses spanning Luzon. The sprawling 10.7-hectare main campus has the College of Communication Building, College of Engineering and Architecture Building, Institute of Technology Building, and also the Hasmin Building. Meanwhile, the Compound Campus contains the Senior High School.

The main campus houses, well, Apolinario Mabini’s house

The main campus of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines is in Sta. Mesa, Manila. Inside, you’ll find the historic original—albeit restored—Mabini Shrine. It’s the house where national hero, the “sublime paralytic” Apolinario Mabini lived and died in 1903. 

Here’s a little history lesson for all you Filipiniana buffs! Belonging to Mabini’s brother, the house originally sat across the Pasig river in Pandacan, Manila. The house first relocated to the Malacañang Park grounds upon the building of the Nagtahan Bridge—now Mabini Bridge. Then, because the banks of the Pasig river were being widened, the Mabini house finally moved to the PUP Main Campus. Until now, the original house stands with Mabini’s memorabilia and some furniture replicas.
