Canada is known for its fascinating sceneries and weather. The majestic Niagara Falls, famous maple syrup, diverse culture as well as affordable and high-quality universities are just some of the countless reasons to study in Canada. No wonder the country is home to hundred thousands of international students. If you’re planning to study abroad in Canada, here some of the important things you need to know:
Step 1: Check all the requirements.
Applying to schools in Canada requires a number of documents depending on the college and course you are planning to take. You need to understand the rules and regulations that apply to each school. One of the most important things you need to prepare is the Canadian Student Visa. The Canadian and Philippine governments have recently partnered and launched the Study Direct Stream (SDS) program that allows easier and faster application process for Filipino students wanting to study in Canada.
Step 2: Choose the right college and course for you.
After checking all the requirements, the next step is to find the right institution where you’ll take your degree. Make sure that the school is a certified school. Sites like Edukasyon.ph Study Abroad has a wide database of international and foreign schools that you can visit.
Knowing your passion, considering professional advice and doing your own research are just some of the ways you can find the right course for you.
Step 3: Take Language Proficiency Tests.
To successfully enter Canada as a student, you need to pass the required language proficiency test. The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a recognized proficiency test that is widely accepted in countries such as Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand. It consists of four parts: writing, listening, speaking, and reading. The speaking portion is done through a face-to-face interview with a certified examiner.
Step 4: Apply to your dream university.
Once you have your list of schools, now’s the time send your application letters. Make sure to double check the application forms that you submit. It’s best to apply to your desired schools in advance to give you enough time to prepare. Application fees vary depending on the institution that you’re planning to enter, but it can cost around $100 to $250.
Step 5: Search and apply for a scholarship
Studying abroad in Canada comes with a cost. However, there are plenty of available scholarships in Canada that you can apply. These scholarships may be awarded based on your academic performance, leadership skills, or financial need. While other financial grants are degree-specific.
Step 6: Plan your calendar.
Once your application details have been processed and you have been interviewed by immigration officers, you’ll just have to wait for your study permit approval. If accepted, you may now start planning your travel and study time in Canada. Your study permit will have a start date so you need to plan your calendar carefully. Before you proceed on packing for your things, make sure to check first about the school’s dress code requirements. Generally, Canada has four very distinct seasons: spring, summer, fall, and winter. So you might need to prep a set of clothes for each.
Step 7: Consider getting a post-study work permit.
Great opportunities do not stop once you finished studying in Canada. After your graduation, you can also consider working in Canada. How? You will need to get a Post Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) which will allow you to work after you have completed your studies. Remember that you need to file your application within 90 days after confirming the completion of your program.
