All You Need to Know About the Registered Electrical Engineer Exam

Does the idea of designing and handling contraptions that spark with electricity excite you (no pun intended)? If that’s a yes, then the life of an electrical engineer suits you!

Becoming an electrical engineer means you get to work on technology that deals with electricity. This includes focusing on machinery that produces electrical energy such as generators, appliances, and other devices.

BS Electrical Engineering students tend to finish the course in five years, though some schools which hold trimestral systems conclude their Electrical Engineering programs after four years.

But just because you’ve acquired your Electrical Engineering degree doesn’t mean you can automatically start practicing your degree! Dealing with electrical energy is a big responsibility, which is why the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) requires a board exam for electrical engineers!

Specifically known as the Registered Electrical Engineer Licensure Examination, this board exam is administered alongside the Master Electrician Examination by PRC’s Board of Electrical Engineering. It serves as the culminating exam for engineering students who wish to apply their electrical engineering skills professionally. There are numerous careers that registered electrical engineers can focus on, especially once they’re licensed to practice their profession!

So what do you want to know about the Registered Electrical Engineer Exam? And what should you expect from this exam?

What application requirements should I prepare for the Registered Electrical Engineer Exam?

Before you can start applying for the board exam, you’ll need to prepare the following documents:

• One (1) NSO / PSA Birth Certificate
• One (1) NSO / PSA Marriage Contract (if you’re a married female applicant)
• Transcript of Records, which include a scanned image of yourself and remarks “For Board Examination Purposes”
• An exam fee of Php 900.00

When can you take the Registered Electrical Engineer Exam? 

The two-day Registered Electrical Engineer Exam takes place twice a year, particularly in April and September. Registrations take place three months before the exams, which means you can apply for the April exam from December to March, while September applicants can register as early as May. 

If you’re planning to take the exam in 2019, the first set of test dates will be on April 15 and 16, while the second set will be held on August 31 and September 1.

As of writing, registrations for the April exams are already done, so if you’ve missed your chance to apply for the April exams, you can always apply for the September exam in May.

The Registered Electrical Engineer Exam has three main categories: Mathematics, Engineering Sciences and Allied Subjects, and Electrical Engineering Professional Subjects.

Keep in mind that the Electrical Engineering Professional Subjects category holds the most weight, covering 45% of your entire exam. That’s nearly half of your entire exam! But it doesn’t mean you should disregard the other two categories. Engineering Sciences and Allied Subjects have a 30% weight while its Mathematics category holds a 25% rate. Do your best in every question!

What is the passing rate of the Registered Electrical Engineering Exam?

In every Registered Electrical Engineering Exam, the passing score is 70%. You must also not have a grade below 50% in any subject.

Where can I check my results?

You can find your results at PRC’s official website. They usually release the results three working days after they’ve conducted the exam.
