MANILA – Citing the 2016-2017 higher education facts and figures, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) noted that business and education courses are still two of the most popular courses that most young Filipinos are taking up.

According to the enrollment statistics, the top five courses are:

  • Business Administration-Related with 921,324 enrollees
  • Education and Teacher Training with 740,713
  • Engineering and Technology with 448,550
  • Information and Technology with 398,765
  • Medical-Allied with 203,561.

More male students are taking up courses related to computer science and engineering such as Information Technology, Marine Transportation, Civil Engineering, Industrial Technology, and Marine Engineering/Technology. Meanwhile, the other top courses are Elementary Education, Business Administration, Criminology, Secondary Education, and Hotel and Restaurant Management.

Meanwhile, female students are more interested in taking up Business Administration, Secondary Education, Elementary Education, Hotel and Restaurant Management, Information Technology, Accountancy, Criminology, and Tourism and Travel Management. Health-related courses such as Psychology and Nursing are also among their top choices.

Speaking to the 120 attendees of the three-day 6th United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization- Asia Pacific Program of Educational Innovation for Development (UNESCO) Meeting on Entrepreneurship Education last October 23, CHED chair Patricia Licuanan noted how more young Filipinos are taking up entrepreneurship courses in the past years.

“Aside from these programs in entrepreneurship, there are other programs that have started incorporating entrepreneurship courses such as Business Administration, Engineering, Information Technology, Computer Science, Agribusiness, and Science,” Licuanan said.

“That seems to be changing as more are attracted to entrepreneurship. Indeed, the enthusiasm for entrepreneurship has grown among our youth,” she added.
