Climate in Crisis: Youth Movements & How to Get Involved

Climate change is a real thing, and the youth are not afraid to take action to protect the planet they live in for the sake of their future and for the next generations to come.

There have been many climate movements and organizations established in the past; but, what’s different today is how huge of a role the youth have, always willingly and actively participating. Based on the Philippine Statistics Authority in 2015, Millennials and Gen Z in total make up half of the 100 million population in the country, with 36% Millennials and 31% Gen Z. The youth have such a large voice and understand the importance of speaking out to further spread awareness on social and environmental issues they believe in.

Their movements have the like-minded passion and common goal for educating and empowering the youth to become climate champions. Coupled with maximizing the use of social media, their actions have certainly helped spread more attention on the gravity and urgency of this situation regarding climate change and the environmental injustice it brings, most especially to people living in poverty.

Over the years, climate change has been increasingly posing serious and dangerous threats to both the environment and its inhabitants, which includes not only plants and animals, but as well as us human beings. A visible result of this can be experienced through the extremity of weather events, ranging from drought and heat waves to powerful typhoons that have wreaked havoc and destruction to many communities and livelihoods. It also threatens our food security as it affects crops, livestocks, and fisheries.

Take inspiration or better yet, get involved with these youth-led movements and organizations who are committed to their social and environmental advocacies, and in uniting against the ongoing climate crisis.

Kids for Kids

Kids for Kids PH is a youth empowerment and charity organization that envisions climate and social justice for future generations. Since 2015, the organization has been passionate in educating the youth of environmental and social issues, and in taking action. They’ve led numerous tree adoptions, relief operations and donation drives for typhoon and pandemic victims, and are continuously partnering up with fellow youth-led organizations. Over the years, from a group of friends to now having more than 800 volunteers, they have been expanding to further spread awareness and connect with likeminded people, such as through sister organization, Bye Bye Plastic Bags PH which is against plastic waste in the country, and Habilin for educating the youth on social, economic and environmental issues.

Youth Strike 4 Climate Philippines

Being one of the pioneer youth-led climate movements in the country, Youth Strike 4 Climate Philippines (YS4C) has since grown into a network and alliance of Sangguniang Kabataan, youth and student organizations, advocacy groups, and individuals in different regions, cities, and municipalities in the country. Through their band of young climate advocates, they are driven in educating the youth to learn and act against the alarming climate crisis. May this be through organizing a series of workshops, participating in local and global climate strikes, speaking in relevant talks and webinars, and more, all with the goal of “humanizing climate action through activism and storytelling.”

YACAP

Youth Advocates for Climate Action Philippines (YACAP) describes themselves as the counterpart of Fridays for Future in the country, a global climate strike movement started by then 15-year-old Swedish activist Greta Thunberg. Since YACAP’s establishment in the year 2019, they have initiated donation drives for typhoon victims and have been actively participating in both local and global climate strikes as a call for urgency for climate action. Despite the current pandemic halting mass strikes, YACAP is still committed in empowering Filipinos and climate justice by partnering with youth organizations, individuals, and student councils with the united passion for immediate global climate action. Last September 25, 2020, they participated in the Global Climate Strike by leading physically-distanced actions nationwide, as well as holding digital strikes by promoting the hashtag #KamayParaSaKlima.

BFF Movement by Forest Foundation Philippines

For anyone who’s passionate in conserving and protecting our forests, you can sign up as a BFF! Forests have many direct and indirect benefits, from the wood we use for our daily items to our social and cultural recreation to our own different kinds of livelihoods. It shouldn’t be underestimated given that it covers more than half of Earth’s terrestrial biodiversity.

Amidst the threats and challenges faced by the country’s forests, Forest Foundation Philippines’ Best Friends of the Forest (BFF) Movement is a community of young and action-oriented travelers, conservationists, social entrepreneurs, and artists, who aim to inspire people to be advocates of forest conservation and protection. The BFFs live their advocacies and share their passion for the forests every chance they get. This is reflected in all their actions – from their lifestyle, to their livelihoods and even to their hobbies. By tapping into their passion points, such as social entrepreneurship, arts and culture, conservation, and responsible travel, they are able to help protect and conserve our forests, and empower new BFFs.
