Everything You Need to Know About the Master Electrician Exam

Becoming a master electrician is no walk in the park. It means you’re the go-to for electricians when it comes to assigning projects for commercial, industrial and residential areas. Master electricians are also involved in supervising the planning stages of a project while ensuring that these projects have all the necessary materials at hand. Most importantly, they are also trained to diagnose, repair, and remove electrical parts for the sake of fixing a problem.

But how does one become a master electrician? Aside from learning the necessary skills in any duly-recognized institution, you can only be deemed a master electrician once you’ve successfully passed the Registered Master Electrician Board Exams conducted by the Professional Regulation Committee (PRC).

When are the exams usually held?

The Registered Master Electrician Exam is a one-day exam that usually takes place twice a year. They are held every April and September, leaving you with a couple of chances to take the exam in a year. Applications are also held three months before each exam. For example, if you are applying for the April exam, you can apply from December of the previous year to March of the present year.

For 2019, the exams will be held on April 17 and September 2. As of this writing, you can no longer apply for the April 17 exam, but registrations for the September exam will last from May 1 to August 1, 2019.

What application requirements should I prepare for the Registered Master Electrician Exam?

Before you can start taking the exam, you will need to prepare the following documents:

• One NSO / PSA Birth Certificate
• One NSO / PSA Marriage Contract (if you’re female and are married)
• Transcript of Records Containing Scanned Photo and Remarks “For Board Examination Purposes”
• An entrance fee of Php 600.00

What is the coverage of the Registered Master Electrician Exam?

Based on the rules set by PRC’s Board of Electrical Engineering, the Master Electrician Exam is divided into two categories. The first half of the exam covers the Technical Subject of a Master Electrician while the second half deals with Parts 1 and 2 of the Philippine Electrical Code.

Each of these categories covers the following subjects:

Technical Subject

• Control Equipment Description and Functions of Fuses (e.g. circuits breakers, D.C. motor starters, magnetic switches, overload relays, safety switches, star-delta motor starters, transformer-type motor starters)
• Electrical Engineering Law Provisions that affect Registered Master Electricians
• Electrical Machines (particularly the descriptions and operations of generators, motors, and transformers)
• Maintenance and Repair (particularly the description of the procedures in maintaining electrical machinery)
• Ohm’s Law (e.g. calculations for resistance, current, voltage and power for AC and DC)
• Test Equipment (e.g. types and uses of instrument measurements)

Philippine Electrical Code, Parts 1 and 2

• Approved Wiring Methods
• Drawing Symbols and Wiring Plans
• General Requirements for Installation of Electric Wiring and Equipment
• Installation of Switchboard and Panel Boards
• Types of Wiring Materials and Wiring Devices
• Wiring Diagrams of Different Types of Motor Starters with Motor Protection

Both of these exams are equally weighted at 50%, so you’ll have to get a high score on both categories in order to pass!

What is the passing rate of the Registered Master Electrician Exam?

In order to pass the Master Electrician Exam, your grade has to be at least 70%. But this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take it easy on any of these categories! You must also make sure that you should have no grade lower than 50% in any of the subjects.

What are the top performing schools of the Registered Master Electrician Exam?

Although there are schools that can help you hone the skills of a general electrician around the Philippines, the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) also has assessment centers that can teach you the trade. Once you’ve earned your National Certificate, you’re well on your way to becoming a Master Electrician! But if you really want a school that consistently produces board topnotchers each year, consider enrolling in any of these institutions!

Where can I check my results?

The Board of Electrical Engineering usually releases its results three working days after the day of the exam, which you can find on PRC’s official website.

By then, all that you can do is hope for the best. But no matter what, always do your best and never stop trying!
