Everything You Need to Know About the Midwifery Board Exam

Raising a baby to adulthood is no walk in the park. But literally raising a baby from its mother’s womb upon delivery is just as important. Thank goodness, this is where midwives come and save the day.

A midwife is a person in the healthcare industry who assists women during the process of birthing a baby, which lasts from the labor to the delivery, and even after their baby’s birth. Although most midwives can be found assisting in births at a hospital, they can also deliver babies at birthing centers or even at home. Most women who’d rather prefer delivering their babies with midwives in attendance are those who have no complications at the duration of their pregnancy.

Similar to a doctor or an obstetrician, a midwife attends to your pregnancy needs before, during, and after the baby is out. They usually work with obstetricians—doctors whose specialties lie in pregnancies, women’s reproductive systems, and childbirth. Midwives are no different in the sense that they also attend to a mother’s family planning and provide education about her pregnancy, on top of assisting with the delivery.

This is why practicing as a midwife is regulated by Republic Act No. 7392 or the Philippine Midwifery Act of 1992. This means that students who intend to practice professionally will have to take the Midwifery Board Exam, which is set by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC).

When Does The Exam Take Place?

The Midwifery Board Exam takes place twice a year: one in April and another in November. Registrations usually last for three months, particularly from December to March for the April exams, and July to October for the November test.

For applicants who are planning to take the exam in 2019, exams will be held from April 10 to 11 at Baguio, Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, Legaspi, Manila, Pagadian, Tacloban, Tuguegarao, and Zamboanga. Aspiring midwives who intend to take the second half of the exams can take them on November 2 and 3.

How Do I Apply for the Midwifery Exam?

You will first have to set an appointment before you can fill out an application in any PRC office. You can do so online using the PRC’s Licensure Examination and Registration Information System (LERIS).

The PRC has strictly adhered to using the PRC LERIS for applicants who wish to check on their exams, registrations, and license renewal applications. Giving access to an online portal means applicants no longer have to worry about long queues.

How Do I Register Online?

Before anything else, you will need the following application documents:

  • A valid e-mail address;
  • One valid ID card
  • Your personal information (e.g. address, mobile number, date of your college graduation);
  • One scanned copy of your 2×2 ID picture in .jpg format (picture must be on a plain white background with a decent collared attire, and must not have been taken after more than six months before the date of upload. Do not wear glasses or cover your ears in the photo.)
  • One cedula or community tax certificate

Start by accessing the PRC LERIS through this link. Once you’re there, check out the REGISTER tab, browse through the Terms and Conditions, then press the “I AGREE” button to move forward.

Fill out your personal details on your application form and include a strong password. For stronger security, you might want to add a password that has at least one special character, one number, and one letter. Once you’ve fulfilled all these requirements, confirm everything by pressing the “REGISTER” button.

With a new account, click the SIGN-IN tab and key in your username and password. It will then ask you to fill out your very own account profile by completing all the necessary personal information. Once you’re done, hit “SAVE INFORMATION” at the bottom half of the page, which will prompt a pop-up to ask if all your information is confirmed. Simply confirm that all the information is correct.

It will then ask you to upload your recent 2×2 ID photo. You must make sure that your photo has passed the criteria mentioned above, otherwise, your application might get rejected.

Once you’re done, press the “SELECT TRANSACTION” button at the upper-right corner of the page. Choose the Examination tab to check out the drop-down buttons to add more information, then click on the Proceed button. It will then ask you to choose the PRC office you wish to send your application. Pick the PRC office that you want, along with the date and time of your choice. Keep in mind that you can’t set an appointment on the day of your application, so make sure to plot your appointment date ahead of time before you hit that Proceed button.

Lastly, you will need to pay for your PRC application. It will ask for the payment method of your choice, where you can choose between UCPB, Landbank, or the PRC cashier. For Landbank transactions, you can either choose to pay through a Landbank account, Bancnet or GCASH.

Once you’re done with your payment, print out your application form, which you can find by returning to your account profile and checking the “EXISTING TRANSACTION” button on the upper-left side of the page.

For those who would rather pay through the PRC cashier, give your amount on the day of your appointment. Make sure to print out a proof that you’ve set an appointment online.

By then, go to the PRC Office on the date of your appointment. Make sure to bring your printed application form and the rest of your documents before doing so!

What Documents Should I Prepare?

On the day of your appointment, make sure to bring the following requirements:

  • NSO or PSA Birth Certificate
  • NSO or PSA Marriage Contract (for married female exam takers)
  • Transcript of Records, complete with scanned photo and remarks (“For Board Examination Purposes)
  • One notarized document proving you’ve handled 20 deliveries, 5 surgical sutures, and 5 intravenous injections (must be signed by Principal or Dean)
  • P600 exam fee

Can Nurses Take the Midwifery Board Exam?

Yes, they can! Registered nurses who want to become registered midwives must also go through the same steps of processing their documents, albeit with slightly different documents:

  • One copy of PRC ID Card, Transcript of Records OR Board Certificate
  • One notarized document proving you’ve handled 20 deliveries, 5 surgical sutures, and 5 intravenous injections (must be signed by Hospital Director or Municipal Health Officer)
  • Certificate of Consent (from the hospital where you’ve performed these cases)
  • Certificate of Trainings, as recognized by the PRC CPD Council for Midwifery of Registered Midwife who supervised the case (for both graduate midwife and registered nurse)
  • PRC ID License and Employee’s ID of the supervising registered midwife
  • PRC ID License and Employee’s ID of any Certifying Officer (who must be a registered physician)

Are There Certain Criteria I Must Follow for Midwifery Exam Takers?

Yes! If you intend to take the Midwifery Board Exam, you must be at least 18 years old and a midwifery graduate in any government-recognized accredited school. Most importantly, you have to be in good health with good moral character – this is especially needed if you intend to practice with families!

What Should I Expect in the Midwifery Board Exam?

Examinees will have to brush up on their knowledge in health care, particularly caring for women before, during, and after the pregnancy process. The exam mainly consists of the following, unless the PRC Board decides to include more items later on:

  • Community Hygiene and First Aid
  • Domiciliary Midwifery
  • Ethics of Midwifery Practice
  • Family Planning
  • Infant Care and Feeding
  • Midwifery Procedures
  • Nutrition
  • Obstetrical anatomy and Physiology
  • Obstetrics
  • Primary Health Care
  • Principles of Bacteriology (as applied to midwifery practice)
  • Professional Growth and Development

The following topics are also mixed into the aforementioned subjects:

  • Fundamentals of Sociology
  • General Anatomy and Physiology
  • General Psychology
  • Microbiology
  • Nutrition
  • Parasitology
  • Pharmacology
  • Principles of Bacteriology

What is the Passing Rate of the Midwifery Board Exam?

If you intend to practice as a registered midwife, you will have to earn a grade of seventy-five (percent 75%) in the written examination, and you cannot have a score under fifty percent (50%) in any of its subjects.
