Most may not be aware, but one’s personal choices can have an impact on the environment and the lives of other people. 

Last August 2019, the United Nations has warned the world that the present climate change threatens humanity’s food supply. Extreme conditions brought by climate change such as floods, storms, and drought disrupt and over time shrink the global food supply. 

Pero huwag mag-alala. Ang sabi ng UN, may magagawa pa tayo para ma-solve ang problemang ito. More people just need to be aware of the climate and food crises situation and ensure their cooperation in combatting these.

Fortunately, even students like you can do your part in fighting for food sustainability in your own simple ways. Maniwala man kayo o hindi, kahit ang simpleng pag-kain niyo lang ay may malaking impact na sa ating society. By becoming a better “foodie”, magiging mas healthy ka na, makakatulong ka pa sa environment at economy natin. 

Here are five changes you can make to be a better foodie:

1. Adopt a healthier diet  

Having a healthier diet means choosing to eat foods that are not only nutritious but also sustainable. You only consume what is enough to fulfill your daily goals of nutrients from a variety of sources everyday. Napipigilan nito ang matinding food cravings natin na kadalasan ay hindi naman masustansya at kailangan ng ating katawan. 

Having a healthy lifestyle serves as foundation to execute healthy choices for your diet, which can allow you to do the next changes not only for your personal wellness but also the environment.

2. Plan what you will eat ahead

In planning what you will eat ahead, it will allow you to buy only what you need. Planning your meals will be important as you try to achieve a healthier lifestyle too. 

Bago pumunta ng grocery o mag-shopping, maglista lang ng mga kailangang bilhin at mag-budget. This will prevent you from doing impulsive buying which can save you big bucks. But most importantly, this will allow you to waste less food. 

3. Support local food producers

Locally produced foods are always more fresh and more likely to preserve the nutrients because they are most of the time organic. Hindi lang mas masustansya at masarap ang kinakain mo, makakatulong ka pa para kumita ang mga malilit na negosyo at mga magsasaka, at ma-preserve ang food supply sa inyong komunidad. This is important especially in the goal of food sustainability. 

By opting to only buy at your nearby local stores, you also reduce your carbon footprint. You help fight pollution by reducing automobile use and traffic congestion, especially for delivery vehicles.

4. Store food properly and wisely

There are different ways to store your food properly and wisely. Ang pinakasaikat ay ang paggamit ng refrigerators This increases the shelf life of food products especially for frozen ones which can even last up to months. Other way to store properly also is by moving older food products in front of your shelves for you to consume them first before their expiration dates. 

You can also learn to love your leftovers by still putting them in airtight containers inside the refrigerator to keep them fresh. Malaking tulong dito ang mga tupperwares natin. You can still reheat them in microwave ovens or your usual cooking stoves and eat them in the next days. If you are creative, leftovers can also be used as ingredients in different types of dishes and even composting your food scraps to give nutrients back to soils.

5. Segregate your wastes

Lastly, you can put your food waste to good use. Sa tulong ng segregation, makakatulong tayo sa recycling process ng iba’t ibang mga materyales at produkto that can be beneficial for organizations, environment, and the community in general. Recycling helps to divert recyclable wastes away from landfills, lower carbon footprint by using more energy-efficient recycled materials instead of raw ones for material production, and preserve our natural resources by using recycled products more. 

Separating and sorting of waste can help us fulfil our different personal and business environmental obligations and in turn, help save money, energy, and our natural resources.

We can surely fight climate change by preventing food waste. Isipin niyo na lang ang dami ng mga natural resources na ating mase-save at tone-toneladang greenhouse gas emissions ang mapipigilan natin if we just consume our food products the healthy and environmental-friendly way. 

Aside from doing the five changes stated above, the next crucial step is to spread awareness and show that we walk our talk. Let us spread the “foodie” movement and help save the environment.
