How Do We Empower Girls? Through Education!

Dr. Jose Rizal once famously said, “Kabataan ang pag-asa ng bayan.” Whitney Houston even agreed when she sang, “I believe the children are our future, teach them well and let them lead the way!” The words of these famous people cannot be more true, besties! That is why empowering young girls to be the leaders of tomorrow means giving them the quality education they deserve — what we  deserve!

And, what a better way to get quality education than to be a Scholastican!

The Premier Women’s College in Manila

Established in 1906, St. Scholastica’s College sits at the heart of Manila, in Malate. Since it was founded, St. Scholastica’s College (or “St. Scho,” as most of us call it) has been the premier educational institution for women. It is a college that nurtures the value of academic freedom, emphasizes a liberating and positive approach to learning, and fosters a research and innovation-focused environment! At St. Scho, students are given all the resources and freedom they need to take on the studies of their interests, helping them break barriers as the leaders of tomorrow! And, these are proven by the number of awards that St. Scho has received throughout the years!

For starters, St. Scho’s college programs in Accountancy, Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, and Elementary and Secondary Education were all granted Level III accreditation by the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (PAASCU). A roster of Arts and Sciences programs has recently been granted Level IV accreditation including  Business Administration, Mass Communication, Political Science, Elementary and Secondary Education, BS Psychology, and BS Biology. Its School of Music, the pioneer conservatory of music in the country, has been awarded as a Center of Excellence in Music Education by the Commission on Higher Education. SSC Manila’s School of Business and Accountancy is granted the Certificate of Accreditation to offer refresher courses by the Professional Regulatory Board of Accountancy. Even their faculty members and students are award recipients, further proving the quality of education at St. Scholastica’s College!

Also, one of the things that St. Scho is known for is how they empower women, but empowering women means empowering men, too! St. Scholastica’s College is also open and welcomes male students!  Boys can enroll in preschool, senior high school (Arts and Design and Music Performance tracks,) college (Music, Fine Arts, Interior Design, Hospitality Management and Tourism programs,) and even graduate school. At St. Scho, there’s always a room for everyone!

The Home of Leaders

With St. Scholastica’s College’s decades-long mark of quality education, it isn’t surprising that their students grow to become successful individuals and pillars of our society! Some of them are even the pathmakers for the rest of us!

One of these pioneering women is Justice Cecilia Muñoz-Palma, the first female Supreme Court Justice in the Philippines way back in the ‘70s. She attended St. Scholastica’s College for her secondary education and graduated in 1931. Another who finished her secondary education from St. Scho in 1982 is Captain Ma. Aurora Carandang-Gloria. She is the Philippines and Southeast Asia’s first female pilot.

In the world of politics, Philippines’ first female president, the late Corazon “Cory” Aquino, finished her basic education at St. Scho way back in 1943. And, in the world of pageantry, Gloria Maria Diaz, won the title of Ms. Universe 1969 one year after she finished her secondary education at St. Scho.  More recently, the first Filipino Nobel Peace Prize Winner, Maria Ressa, started her formative years at SSC Manila before her family migrated to the US where she continued her education.

And that’s just scratching the surface of St. Scho’s list of notable graduates!

The Epitome of Ora et Labora

The motto of St. Scholastica’s College is Ora et Labora, which is Latin for “Prayer and Work.” At St. Scho, this motto cannot be more true as students are taught to put in the work to effect change at the same time they are taught the values, the theories, and the faith they need to become the leaders of tomorrow. With heavy emphasis on morals, Scholasticans are known to be social justice warriors, ready to give a voice to the voiceless and powerless.

Being a Scholastican truly embodies what it means to be empowered. With their academics, extracurriculars, and even their graduates who have become changemakers in our country and beyond, St. Scholastica’s College is truly the premier institution of learning in the Philippines.
