How to Make the Most of Your Summer Before College

Especially now that your life resembles a sci-fi thriller rather than the coming of age film you dreamed of.

If Mean Girls, Easy A, and 10 Things I Hate About You taught us anything, it’s that high school isn’t everything. And that the people that peak in that phase of their life often go downhill from there. Don’t tell them I said that though.

A year into the pandemic and most of us can barely distinguish the line between work and home. Pretty soon, students will be graduating from schools that they’ve never stepped foot in since they were admitted. And for all those who will be donning invisible togas and attending their virtual graduation this year, a single question is lodged at the back of their throats:

“Whatever will happen to the (overly) hyped “summer after high school?”
When we first met? Nope, this isn’t the summer to be snogging boys. Maybe in another life? All jokes aside, the tables have definitely turned for high school seniors this year. But that doesn’t mean you can’t stand on them and make them your stage, take High School Musical for example. Why Stick to the Status Quo?

Here’s how to make the most of your summer before college. Especially now that your life resembles a sci-fi thriller rather than the coming of age film you dreamed of.

1. Alexa, play “Le Festin

Seriously though, how good are your sauté skills? If you’re still making Dalgona at this point (no judgement, it’s still coffee) it’d be a great time to expand your menu by learning a new dish or two! No matter where you go, cooking is a universal language despite its many tongues.

2. Secure the bag, get that coin!

What greater time to dip your toes into the water than now? With the vast opportunities for remote work, you could very much jumpstart your career within the comfort of your home. We do love a woman (or man!) on a mission.

3. Self, need mo’ Help?

Whether it be breaking a bad habit, or exploring other worlds, you have time in your hands to indulge in it. Self-help, fiction, or mystery —books are practically everywhere. Think FB Marketplace, Shopee, or even the ones tucked away and collecting dust in your bodega. You might wanna consider donating some to your local charity! Help spread the magic of books if you know what I mean.

4. It’s not me, it’s you

Sometime in the 16th century, literary figure Johann Wolfgang once said, “Tell me who your friends are, and I’ll tell you who you are.” The saying still applies centuries later! Proven and tested like your sabong panlaba. Once you’re done filtering out the people you no longer connect with, consider a social media detox. And try not to redownload TikTok after five minutes this time.

5. Settle into a new groove

As tempting as it is to sleep in, creating routines can actually be more beneficial than you think. If you truly want to maximize the “free” time you have, try constructing a schedule that you don’t feel like running away from. Your dream life doesn’t magically materialize sometime in the future, it starts with the choices you make now.

But whatever it is you choose to do, don’t be too hard on yourself. Greece wasn’t built in a day, and neither were you! It’s a testament already that you’ve been around long enough to stumble upon this post. If she’s not engrossed in another book from her never-ending reading list or sobbing over Disney short films, she’s probably biking along ricefields or crossing out everything on her to-do list for the next 3 months. Or debating whether to get her third cup of coffee. Which she probably shouldn’t.
