Are you interested in working in medical laboratories? Passionate about providing better healthcare to other people? Did you know that BS Medical Technology is just one of the degrees that you can take to reach your dream career?

What is Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology?

BS Medical Technology or MedTech is a four-year degree program that provides students with the necessary skills and training in conducting laboratory tests. These tests are used in detecting, diagnosing, preventing, and treating various diseases.

Medical Technologists perform lab investigations based on specimens taken from the human body such as urine, blood, stool and other body fluids through the use of medical equipment (e.g., analyzers, microscopes and other precision instruments.

To be a professional, you must pass first the Medical Technologist Licensure Examination supervised by the Professional Regulation Commission. The board is scheduled twice a year (September and March).

The composition of questions come from six major subjects with their corresponding relative weight. Clinical Chemistry, Microbiology and Parasitology, Hematology, Blood Banking and Serology each have 20% while Clinical Microscopy (Urinalysis and other body fluids) and Histopathologic Technique each have 10%. To pass the MedTech Licensure Examination, you need to achieve a general weighted average of 75% with no rating below 60% in all the subjects.

What are the subjects included in BS MedTech?

Aside from the General Education Core Courses mandated by CHED, prepare yourself because you’ll be dealing with loads of biology-related topics. Here are some pf the subjects that you will encounter under this program:

Core Courses:

  • Inorganic and Organic Chemistry
  • Analytical Chemistry
  • Biochemistry for Med Lab Science
  • Human Anatomy and Physiology with Pathophysiology
  • Principles and Strategies of Teaching in Med Lab Science
  • Biostatistics and Epidemiology
  • Health Information System for Med Lab Science

Professional Courses:

  • Community and Public Health
  • Human Histology
  • Molecular Biology and Diagnostics
  • Med Tech Laws and Bioethics
  • Cytogenetics
  • Clinical Chemistry
  • Clinical Parasitology
  • Hematology
  • Laboratory Management
  • Mycology and Virology
  • Analysis of Urine and Body Fluids

What skills do I need to have to succeed in BS MedTech?

Choosing a career in Medical Technology can be both challenging and fulfilling. Here are some of the essential skills you need to possess in order to succeed in this course:

Behavioral:

  • Initiative
  • Integrity
  • Teamwork
  • Ability to work well under pressure

What are the specializations in Medical Technology?

As you study this course, there are some particular areas in MedTech which you might find enjoyable or interesting. Here are some of the specializations you can try:

  • Chemistry – MedTech specialization that deals with the measurement of different chemical levels in a patient’s body.
  • Blood Banking – involves collecting and processing donated blood and storing them for later use; as well as ensuring the safe transfusion and use of blood for those need it.
  • Immunology – focuses on the study of different foreign bodies and how each one affect the immune system.
  • Hematology – deals with the study of blood samples and diseases
  • Microbiology – studies microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi and its a to the human body.

What are the career opportunities for graduates of BS MedTech?

Pursuing the MedTech course can lead you to a wide array of career options in the future. Here are some of the fields that you can pursue:

  • Histologist – helps in identifying the cause of patient symptoms and checks any warning signs of disease;  usually works closely with pathologists and diagnosticians.
  • Parasitologist – focuses on the study of animal parasites – their characteristics, habits, and life cycles. In many occasions, they also investigate undiagnosed human illness and possible parasitic invasion that may be related to it.
  • Crime Lab Analyst – work in labs and analyze various forms of physical evidence collected by police detectives and forensic technicians at crime scenes.
  • Toxicologist – determines the risk of negative effects of certain chemicals on humans, animals and the environment.
  • Medical Research Assistant – researches in various clinical settings; helps collect samples and specimens from subjects, perform routine tests and procedures, gathers data and ensure that test protocols are properly documented.
  • Chief Medical Technologist – manages and supervises laboratory tests to ensure that they are done accurately and on time.
  • Forensic Chemist – analyzes evidence that is collected at crime scenes by using principles of chemistry, genetics and biology
  • Pharmacologist – focuses on the impact of chemicals and other pharmaceutical substances, such as medicinal plants on the human body.
  • Medical Laboratory Manager – responsible for the operation and administration of clinical laboratories
  • Chief Medical Researcher – works with hospitals, science laboratories or independent organizations. Their job is to compile and analyze information about diseases as well as patient’s interaction with drugs and their progress.
  • Clinical Pathologist – collects samples from patients. They analyze blood, urine, and other body fluid specimens under a microscope or with the use of other diagnostic tools to observe levels of certain chemicals and/or other substances in the body.
