Parents, teachers play key roles in career guidance

CITY OF MANILA – Parents and teachers should be proactive in discussing career guidance with their children and students to prevent job mismatch as the first batch of the senior high program graduates this March, according to an impact report by social enterprise Edukasyon.ph.
After conducting a two-day College and Career Awareness and Readiness Seminar (CARES) in Manila last October with more than 1,000 students, teachers, and parents, the post-event report recommended that key education stakeholders must see the bigger potential of each student in terms of their skills, interests, and dreams to be properly guided on their dream career.
“Upon the implementation, it proved relevant to remind parents and teachers of the changing youth brought about by the era of advanced technology, and how the times, strategies, and preferences of before are significantly different from now,” the report noted.
“Even if the skills and interests indicated by the parents have roughly matched that of the child’s, it is worth noting that from observation, a lot of the parents were confirming with the child whether their answers were the same as theirs,” it added.
Moreover, the report proposed that teachers must help their students realize their full potential. “As for the teachers, they also have recognized their equally important role as coaches in the career preparations of the youth.”
Meanwhile, same with the results of the nationwide CARES program last August, senior high strands in the academic track were the most preferred track by parents. “[T]he parents’ most preferred track/strand yielded a 25% vote for ABM, followed by STEM and HUMSS at 21% and 20% respectively as the top choices,” the report further said.
In partnership with ICTSI Foundation, Inc. and Career Development Association of the Philippines (CDAP), Edukasyon.ph held the CARES program last October in Jose Abad Santos High School (JASHS), Binondo, Manila
Additionally, the report also noted that a majority of the participants were more certain with their chosen tracks or at least had a rough idea of whom they want to be in the future.
The CARES program is a holistic training and community mentoring program involving different stakeholders in a student’s life which may include parents, teachers, guidance counselors, and school administrators. The project aims to provide long-term college and career training support for Grade 9 and 10 students.
“Thank you for coming [to] our school. Now I have my final decision regarding [which] course to take,” one JASHS Grade 10 student said.
Edukasyon.ph is a social enterprise in the education technology sector that connects students to education opportunities through an online portal, www.edukasyon.ph, and promotes career awareness among the Filipino youth.
