PTA Meetings: How important is it for you and your child?
PTA meeting is just one of the various activities conducted by the Parent-Teacher Association of schools. The main role of Parent-Teacher Associations is to build strong relationships between parents, teachers, and the whole school community. But as parents deal with the everyday demands of work and family, should PTA meetings be a priority?
Here are the top 3 reasons why you should attend PTA meetings:
You can learn more about your child
No one knows children as their parents do, but as students spend almost half (or more) of their day at school, there may be some things about them that parents could be missing. PTA conferences can a great opportunity to hear teachers tell something new about your child. It can also be a time to address any academic or behavioral issues that your kid may be dealing with.
“When my son was accepted as a Grade 7 transferee in Ateneo de Manila, it was his time to prove himself. For some kind of charm and luck, he became the Class President. Simultaneously, I was also elected as a Class Parent Representative that year, and became one of the Class Parent Officers the following years. I believe it is a big responsibility to accept such task but for my family, it helps us monitor and support our son as well as the rest of the batch in various ways,” said Diwata Paredes, a mother of a Grade 11 student at Ateneo De Manila Senior High School.
“We get to personally talk to their teachers and some school officials. They inform us about important matters related to our child’s progress in school, academically and even socially. For those who have any subject area problems, parents are also given tips on how to help their sons and daughters cope in class; and if lucky enough, extra study sessions with the teacher in charge,” Diwata shared further.
You strengthen communication between teachers and other parents
Aside from getting insights about your child’s performance, face-to-face meetings help build harmonious relationships among co-parents and teachers. “In Ateneo, especially now that my son is in Senior High School, parents are active partners in raising responsible adolescents so this is also one kind of sacrifice –to have the chance to share best parenting practices to our co-parents,” shares Diwata.
Despite her busy schedule as a working mom, Diwata still makes sure to allot some time to be involved in her son’s student journey.
“Being a Class Parent Representative gives me first-hand information on school-related activities, special announcements, and assessments of students’ progress in academic and extracurricular events. In several instances, I find myself either leading co-parents to make sure they attend to their sons’ needs not only material needs but also the need to provide emotional and moral support. I realized the impact of parent-child relations in coping with their studies. It is not true that if we, as parents, provide them with what they need, the school will fill the gap. It is still a family-school partnership.”
You get to support your child in so many ways
Participating in school events can also be a way to show your child your love and support for them. “Believe it or not, when our children see us attend class meetings, they are so flattered even if they are already in Senior High. I think this is a testament that our presence is still very much important for them especially during big events in school,” said Diwata.
