Should I Study Information Technology (IT) or Computer Science?

Gone are the days when people were doubtful about having a career centered on computers and gaming. With all the technological developments year after year, most disciplines (including business, medicine and even education) are integrating tech into their own systems. If you’re among those who look forward to pursuing a tech-related career, chances are you’ve checked out these two courses and wondered how exactly do they differ.
Look no further, because the basics have been broken down for you:
You Should Study…
|…if installing computer systems, using software and maintaining networks and databases sound like the kind of things you’d enjoy doing||…if you’re more interested in mathematics, software design, and a whole lotta algorithms|
|IT graduates may take on various roles including network architecture, database administration, computer support, information security, and systems administration.||Most CS graduates carry on to becoming software developers and web programmers, making great use of their intensive study on mathematics and computer science theory. They also become programmers, software engineers and/or IT professionals|
Focus of Study
|IT students stay updated with the latest technologies and server software, including Linux, Apache, OpenSSL, Windows Server, Oracle, My SQL and Microsoft SQL Server. Graduates often still further their studies by taking elective courses in specialized programs.||Com Sci students are expected to study mathematical algorithms, programming languages (such as C++, Python or Java; other languages may include HTML, CSS, Java Script, MySQL, and PHP), design patterns, and data structures.|
|Employment of computer and information technology occupations is projected to grow 13 percent from 2016 to 2026, faster than the average for all occupations. These occupations are projected to add about 557,100 new jobs.||Employment of software developers is projected to grow 24 percent from 2016 to 2026, much faster than the average for all occupations. Software developers will be needed to respond to an increased demand for computer software. (U.S.-based survey)|
