Should you pursue Computer Engineering?

Graduation is fast approaching and a million questions must be stirring up in your mind today. Choosing which school to attend and which course to pursue is tough, but if you take the time to reflect and ask yourself the right questions, you might just get the answer you’re looking for.

Does technology interest you? Have you ever dreamt of developing the next groundbreaking app or software? Do the likes of Bill Gates, John McAfee and Eric Schmidt inspire you to work hard and be the best you could be? If you’ve answered ‘yes’ to all the questions, then maybe computer engineering might be the perfect degree program for you.

Computer engineering not only lets you understand coding, various computer languages and handle software but also lets you study and develop the computer hardware needed for operations.

Careers will also not be limited to programming jobs alone as they could also work as software developers, computer hardware architects, systems administrators, chief technology officers, and the like. Computer engineers have the option to work in several industries, be it in aerospace, telecommunications, automotive, manufacturing, healthcare, fuel and many more. You could even pick a specialization of your choice in different fields like artificial intelligence, computer architecture, computer design, operating systems and networks, robotics and software applications – indeed, the possibilities are endless!

In this day and age, being a computer engineer is a really cool profession, but the road to becoming one isn’t easy. If you’re set to take up this course, here are some surefire ways to make you survive the program and finish strong:

Try to get enough sleep

As impossible as it may sound, it still is important to get sleep as much as possible to produce better output. You’ll also be able to think a lot sharper and solve problems better after catching an ample amount of z’s.

Practice makes perfect

Just like any craft, improvement comes with experience. Continue doing what you do – with an end goal of being a bit better than you were before. You don’t have to see big improvements right away. Remember: little progress is still progress.

Study in advance

It pays to know the lessons way before the topic is discussed. Plus, this gives you more time to digest the topic to know it by heart faster! Less time will be wasted trying to learn the topic from scratch.

Be balanced

It’s important to study hard and keep your grades up but grades aren’t everything. College is all about self-discovery, self-improvement, and self-care. Have fun, enjoy! Don’t stress yourself too much. Hang out with friends or watch a movie! Just because your degree is hard, doesn’t mean you have to suffer.

Keep yourself motivated

When the going gets stuff – keep going. And one way to do this is to remember why you started. Draw strength from your family and friends, or keep your goals in mind – this way you’ll never lose focus even if you’re on the verge of giving up.

Be updated

The tech industry is ever-changing. What’s relevant today might be obsolete tomorrow. Keep yourself updated with the trends and cultivate a growing mindset to keep up with the changing tides.

When in doubt, ask for help

You don’t have to go through things alone. Always remember there will always be someone willing to lend you a helping hand – you just have to ask.

Does this interest you? You can search for schools that offer the program.
