What Are The Top Performing Schools In The Physician Licensure Exam?

The road to becoming a doctor in the Philippines is not an easy journey. You need to have a competitive academic background. You also need to pass the National Medical Admission Test (NMAT) before you can enter any medical school in the country. Studying in a medical school can also take four or more years. So it’s best to join an institution that could provide you with the best quality of medical education. To get you started, we’ve prepared a list of the top performing medical schools in the country. This list is based on their performances in the Physician Licensure Exam results from 2016 to 2019.

1. Far Eastern University-Nicanor Reyes Medical Foundation (FEU-NRMF)

The FEU-NRMF Institute of Medicine is a private medical school in the country. The institution offers the Doctor of Medicine program. Over the last four years, the FEU-NRMF Institute of Medicine continues to prove its academic excellence through the school’s board performances. It garnered a passing rate of 97.96% in the March 2019 Physician Licensure Exam.

2. Cebu Institute of Medicine (CIM)

The Cebu Institute of Medicine (CIM) is one of the leading medical institutions in Visayas. The institution is the medical school arm of Velez College. CIM offers a four-year degree in Doctor of Medicine (M.D.). In the September 2018 Physician Licensure Exam, Martin Angelo Tan Zanoria placed 2nd with a passing rate of  90.92%. Meanwhile, Aaron Lemuel Yu Ong placed 7th in the board with a rate of 89.92%.

3. University of Santo Tomas (UST)

Established in 1871, the UST Faculty of Medicine and Surgery is one of the oldest medical schools in the Philippines. The faculty offers the Doctor of Medicine program. The UST Faculty of Medicine and Surgery also has a Center of Excellence award from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED). In the March 2019 Physician board exam, UST alumnus Jan Bendric Co Borbe ranked 1st with a passing rate of 89.83%.

4. University of the Philippines-Manila

UP Manila College of Medicine has a Centers of Excellence in Medicine and Nursing awards from CHED. The college has the Integrated Liberal Arts and Medicine (INTARMED) Program.

INTARMED is a seven-year medical program that leads to the Doctor of Medicine degree. The program aims to shorten the whole medical education by two years. After the pre-med courses, it is then followed by four years of regular medical studies. The last year in the INTARMED program is a clinical internship.

5. Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM)

The Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila College of Medicine is one of the leading medical schools in Metro Manila. The college is a consistent top performing school in the Physician Licensure Exam. In the 2018 medical board exam alone, PLM College of Medicine garnered a high passing rate of 98.37%.

6. St. Luke’s Medical Center College Of Medicine

The St. Luke’s College of Medicine – William H. Quasha Memorial (SLCM-WHQM) is a private medical school in Quezon City. The college offers a five-year Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) program. The program consists of four-year medical studies and a one-year internship.

Since its establishment, SLCM-WHQM continues to produce board passers and topnotchers. One of the school’s recent feats is Ralph Benedict Baranda Ma-alat who ranked 8th (87.58 %) in the March 2019 Physician Licensure Exam.

7. West Visayas State University-La Paz

The West Visayas State University College of Medicine (WVSU-CM) is a public medical school in Iloilo City. Over the last four years, WVSU-CM is one of the leading schools in the country when it comes to medical board results.

West Visayas University College of Medicine graduate Temie Paul Baguio Villarino ranked 9th in the March 2019 Physician Licensure Exam with a passing rate of 87.42%.

8. Ateneo De Manila University School of Medicine and Public Health

The Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health (ASMPH) is the medical school of the Ateneo De Manila University. ASMPH offers a five-year dual degree in Doctor of Medicine and Master in Business Administration (MD-MBA). The college’s current dean is former Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Manuel M. Dayrit.

9. University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center

The University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center (UERMMC) is a private medical school in Quezon City. The school is recognized as a Center of Excellence in Medicine in the country. In the recent March 2019 Physician Licensure Exam, ERMMC graduate Dale Ivan Aurigue Bruel placed 7th with a passing rate of  87.92%.

10. Cebu Doctors’ University College of Medicine

The Cebu Doctors’ University College of Medicine (CDC-CM) is located in Mandaue City, Cebu. CDC-CM continues to join the country’s roster of top performing schools based on board results. In 2010, CHED granted the Cebu Doctors’ University an Autonomous status. The Autonomous status is the highest recognition that CHED can grant to any private university.
