Learnings from the First Community of Practice

On April 28th, Edukasyon.ph hosted the first Yaring Pinay Community of Practice session with representatives from different TVET schools and companies who participated in the Gender Communication Workshops in March 2021. It was a meaningful and productive session to gather all the workshop participants again while providing a space for TVET players to listen to fellow colleagues and peers, share insights and experiences with implementing gender-positive communication strategies, reflect on learnings, and take away ideas for actions to carry forward and make their organizations gender-equal and free from discrimination.

We were honored to hear the successes and inspiring insights from Liza Suarez of Maayo Hotels and Resorts, Daisy Barilea from the TESDA Gender and Development Training Institute, Jessie Cubijano from PSEFI SKILLS, and Marilyn Ventenilla from Teleperformance Philippines. Their sharing validates that promoting gender-equal initiatives in the classrooms and workplaces, indeed, result in positive outcomes -- thus proving that gender equality is smart economics.

Concrete examples of positive outcomes resulting from steering away from using gendered language in job ads, standardizing gender-bending roles and tasks for workers, and investing in workplace facilities to support the retention rate of employees (e.g. on-site childcare facilities for workers) were shared by the guest speakers. Insights on the importance of top-level commitment to creating long-lasting changes for gender and social inclusivity in the organization were also highlighted; as well as the significance of carrying out monitoring and evaluation activities to help organizations understand the existing organizational culture and the learning outcomes generated by gender-equal efforts, to ultimately shift the culture into an inclusive one.
