What does Central Philippine University stand for?


Central Philippine University (CPU) is a higher learning Christian institution founded by the American Baptist Foreign Mission Society in 1905. The university started as the Jaro Industrial School which provided elementary education to unprivileged boys who worked for their tuition. In 1923, it opened its junior college program and changed its name to Central Philippine College. CPU received its university status in 1953.

CPU currently houses colleges of Theology, Agriculture, Arts and Sciences, Hospitality Management, Computer Studies, Education, Engineering, Medical Laboratory, Nursing, and Pharmacy. The school also offers diploma courses on environmental resources, sacred music, teaching among others. CPU also has postgraduate studies on divinity, social work, business administration, library and information science, and engineering. The university is also open to kindergarten, elementary, junior high, and senior high education.

Currently, CPU holds a Commission on Higher Education (CHED)-awarded autonomous status and likewise it is an ISO 9001:2008 Certified institution. CPU is also a center of excellence in agriculture and business administration. They are a center of development in electrical engineering, chemical engineering, electronics engineering, and teacher education.


Central Philippine University Facts:

  • CPU conferred a Doctor of Public Administration Honoris Causa to Secretary Leonor Briones before she became one of the Department of Education Secretary Heads.
  • The university has produced many legislators like the couple Horacio Palma Suansing and Estrellita Bitoonon - Suansing.
  • CPU has one of the oldest campus papers, the Central Echo.
