Geologists study how the Earth works, including the natural planetary processes and issues directly affecting people, such as viability of resources, geological hazards, climate change and environmental protection.
In this course, you will combine a thorough grounding in theoretical and practical geology with technical and commercial skills.
The first year gives you a basic foundation in chemistry, physics, maths, scientific communication and computer skills, as well as an introduction to geology. The second year focuses on the theoretical, laboratory and field skills required to understand geological processes. The final year provides comprehensive coverage of all applied disciplines of geology.
The first two years of the program are based in Perth. The third year is offered at Perth only for Applied Geology, Kalgoorlie only for Mining Geology and Malaysia only for Petroleum Geology. The Petroleum Geology stream is not available for international students studying in Australia.
Many geologists are involved in exploring for the physical resources we need, such as petroleum, coal, minerals, water and building materials.
The Earth is a laboratory for geologists, as growing populations require more resources and humans become more concerned about their impact on the planet. Many graduates work in the mineral and petroleum industries, with some working in groundwater and environmental geology.
You will also be well placed to work in applied geology roles around the world. These roles may be in a large organisation or mining company, or a consultancy firm.
You can study this as part of a double degree:
*Please note not all majors are offered online
High achieving students may complete an additional honours year enabling them to undertake their own significant research project.
