Bachelor of Science in MECHANICAL ENGINEERING Specializing in MACHINE DESIGN and MANUFACTURING (BSME-MDM)

This is a four-year program with a 100% employable technical-vocational competence in machining as its minimum benefit. At its best, the program graduates a LEADER in manufacturing, equipped with the working knowledge in machining, tool & die, welding, casting, plastics, electroplating, electro-mechanics, computer aided design & manufacturing, and industrial management. A totally a different breed of Mechanical Engineers ready to face the needs of today’s industry. In November 2007, DBTC-College BSME-Graduates made DBTC-College the second best performing school in the whole Philippines in Mechanical Engineering and the top performing in the province of Cebu.
The program is Mechanical Engineering with improved features. First, there is an intensive training in metal fabrication and machining skills. Second, it exposes the students to electrical and electronics laboratory hands-on. The above features make the student a multi-skilled or a mechanical-electronic technician.

Primary Career Options:
A Machine Designer and Manufacturer – plans the design and development of devices, equipment and systems used by consumers and industries alike. Develop machines that process materials into products, as well as systems that improve manufacturing efficiency.
An Automation Designer for a Manufacturing Plant – designs the control systems involving electrical, mechanical and electronic components.

OUTCOME-BASED EDUCATION (OBE) FRAMEWORK

OBE is an educational theory that centers the school’s educational system on goals or outcomes. After the completion of the entire program, each student should have attained the goals. In OBE, there is no specified teaching style. Learning and assessments should help students achieve the specified outcomes.

The college department of the school started its OBE approach in the year 2013. By the year 2014, the research office was created to monitor internally its implementation, improvement and compliance with the regulatory standards thus also adopting the Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) approach. The OBE of the school embraces the IUS (Identity of Salesian Institutions for Higher Education) which primarily focuses on the implementation of the Preventive-System of Education in all Salesian institutions worldwide.

The school’s OBE curriculum was grounded in its institutional mission and vision (IMV) statements. The Program Educational Objectives (PEO) of the College Department prepares the graduates to be knowledgeable and skilled in their respective field within a period of three to five years after graduation. The PEO were crafted based partially on the needs and currents demands of the OJT program’s partner industries as part of the school’s stakeholders. Student consultations and faculty meetings were also conducted to gather suggestions and recommendations. The policies, standards and guidelines of regulating bodies were also referred to during its drafting.

The Program Intended Learning Outcomes (PILOs) are more specific statements and were derived from the PEOs for each program offered. The PILOs describe graduates on their attained knowledge, skills and ethics formed by the time of graduation.

The Course Intended Learning Outcomes (CILO) were based and aligned with the PILOs of each programs. It answers the question, “ What should the students be able to do, know and understand by the time the course is completed”. The course design was also based on the Policies, Standards and Guidelines (PSG) of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) for each program.

The chairpersons and the assigned instructors prepared the OBTL for each course. It is composed of the teaching and learning activities (TLA) and assessment methods (AM) that the instructors designed for classroom instruction to align with the CILOs of each course.

IMV, PEO and PILO CQI Process

Assessment, as specified in CMO 37 s.2012 of CHED, is a process that identify, collect, analyze and report data that can be used to evaluate achievement of the PEOs and PILOs. Assessment methods were formulated by the school to determine the attainment of the objectives and outcomes. Evaluation is the process for interpreting the data and evidence accumulated through assessment processes. 

Weekly student consultations were continuously done during their Student Affairs Office (SAO) session and faculty meetings were also continuously conducted to gather concerns and generate suggestions and recommendations. The IMV is reviewed during the strategic planning to determine its
The reviewed IMV, evaluation results, stakeholders’ inputs and standards of regulating institutions were used by the school in its Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) process of the OBE implementation.

PROGRAM EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES (PEO)

Graduates, within three to five years after graduation, should have placed themselves as ethical leaders of society, competitive workers and professionals and successful entrepreneurs, and are expected to achieve the following:
  1. Established in Mechanical Engineering profession that empowers him/her to hold positions above rank and file, locally and globally, that contributes to the ethical and productive practice of engineering careers.
  2. Practiced Mechanical Engineering and related fields in the area of education and machine design and manufacturing with continued career development through graduate studies and/or professional trainings.
  3. Engaged in ethical entrepreneurship that allows him/her to contribute to the development of the nation’s progress.

PROGRAM OUTCOMES (PO)

The POs of the College Department prepares the graduates to be knowledgeable and skilled in their respective field by the time of graduation. the POs of the BSME program are outlined below.

1. Apply knowledge of mathematics and science to solve analytical engineering problems;
2. Design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data;
3. Design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints, in accordance with standards;
4. Function in a multidisciplinary and multi-cultural teams;
5. Identify, formulate, and solve mechanical engineering problems;
6. Understand professional and ethical responsibility
7. Communicate effectively in Filipino language, English language and Engineering Drawings
8. Understandin the impact of mechanical engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context
9. Recognize the need for, and engage in life-long learning
10. Know contemporary issues
11. Use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice
12. Know and understand engineering and management principles as a member and leader of a team, and to manage projects in a multidisciplinary environment
13. A heart to apply Bosconian values in accepting the challenges of holiness and heroism in one's sphere of influence
