What does Notre Dame of Marbel University stand for?

The Notre Dame of Marbel University (NDMU) is a private, Catholic Marist university in Koronadal City, South Cotabato. This educational institution was founded in 1946 by the Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI) with the Religious of Virgin Mary (RVM) Sisters. It first operated as a secondary level educational institution known as Notre Dame of Marbel (NDM) and was considered as the first high school in the province of South Cotabato. Four years later, its management was handed over to the Marist Brothers.

In 1955, the Brothers established a college department and started offering professional degrees to their students. By 1967, the school, then known as Notre Dame of Marbel College, opened its Graduate School of Education. In 1992, Notre Dame obtained its University status and officially became Notre Dame of Marbel University. At present, the school occupies an 8-hectare lot along Alunan Avenue in Koronadal City. It also has a 35-hectare Demonstration Farm for its Agriculture Department.

NDMU currently offers a wide variety of undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate programs in fields that include Teacher Education, Business Administration, Engineering, Information Technology, Social Sciences, and Health Sciences. The university also has a Senior High School department offering the STEM, HUMSS, and ABM strands.

Centered on Marist traditions, the school continues to provide quality education in Mindanao and forms its students to become socially responsible Christians who have a deep regard for their culture. The university’s Teacher Education program is recognized by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) as one of the Centers for Excellence in Teacher Education in Region XI. Its Information Technology program, on the other hand, is considered as one of the Centers of Development for Excellence in Information Technology (CODE-IT) in Regions XI and XII.

Recognizing its research capabilities, the university is also recognized by CHED as a Zonal Research Center for Regions XI and XII and ARMM. Due to the institution’s role in promoting peace, the university was also given the Aurora Aragon Quezon Peace National Award. By 2001, CHEd granted NDMU full autonomy status.
