The Master of Music in Piano Pedagogy is a two-year course of study designed to provide students with a broader perspective/knowledge of the various skills and techniques in piano pedagogy. Music education is a legacy of St. Scholastica’s College (SSC) to education in the Philippines. SSC School of Music is the first music school in the country, which provided formal music education to both young and adults. It was founded in 1907 by Sr. Baptista Battig, OSB, a missionary Benedictine nun from Tutzing, Germany who was a concert pianist before her convent days and started developing the music talents of Filipinos by giving piano lessons using a second hand piano. Since then, SSC has developed piano performers and accompanists, winners in music competitions.
While sustaining a tradition of excellence in performance, SSC’s School of Music has developed a second emphasis in the field of piano pedagogy (studio teaching). The school recognizes that piano graduates are always involved in teaching piano in addition to performing. Thus, SSC pioneers the offering of Master of Music in Piano Pedagogy in the country to provide training and develop skills in teaching all kinds of learners both young and adults.
This expansion in trust is paralleled by a remarkable growth in its library holdings through continuous acquisition of new books, scores, CDs, videos and other materials and donations of library collections from well-known local and international artists. Furthermore, a resource center for Piano Pedagogy was established for the use of alumnae and others. The School of Music’s existing network of music preparatory programs, performance groups, current technological equipment, among others, all stand ready to serve the laboratory phases of the curricula on the graduate level. A recipient of the Commission on Higher Education’s (CHED) “2013-2014 Center of Excellence”award and with its outstanding faculty, SSC’s School of Music is in a position to offer a graduate program in Piano Pedagogy in response to requests made by numerous individuals and alumnae who desire to pursue post-graduate studies in music. With this graduate program, SSC can make a significant contribution to the musical life and development of the country.
