To study for this Certificate III you will need to be an existing contracted apprentice in the field of fabrication engineering. This course will qualify you in light fabrication, boilermaking, welding and general fabrication. Working from detailed drawings you’ll be expected to become proficient in using welders, guillotines, electric and hand shears, soldering and brazing equipment, pan brakes, presses, sanders and polishers. Training is delivered in workshops, in the classroom and at your place of work.
Light Fabrication
The apprentice will generally be involved in the production, manufacture and repair of a wide range of light metal products, including ducts for air-conditioning, hospital and catering equipment, office furniture, refrigeration cabinets, tanks, vats and pipes using thin, flat sheets of metal. The metal sheets are mainly of zinc-covered steel, stainless steel, vinyl covered steel, copper and aluminium, and usually are not more than 3mm thick.
Boilermaking - Welding
The apprentice will generally work with heavy gauge steel: cutting, shaping, assembling and welding. Typically, they work for heavy engineering companies involved in the production, fabrication and development of items manufactured from plate materials, generally in steel of varying thickness but can be involved with non-ferrous materials. They may also be employed in the construction industry putting together steel components for major structures - buildings, bridges etc. Another application of the skill could involve the manufacture of cooling towers, pressure vessels, hoppers, mining equipment, excavation buckets, large trailer bodies, smoke stacks, transformer containers, storage bins and large pipe work.
General Fabrication
Apprentices undertaking this role will be involved in the fabrication, welding, forging, structural steel erection, sheetmetal working, metal finishing, pattern making, moulding, and the use of related computer controlled equipment using metals, plastics, carbon fibre, composite materials, ceramics and other materials.
