University of Canterbury (UC), established in 1873, is the second oldest university in New Zealand. The university was formerly known as Canterbury College. UC was set up on the Oxbridge model with one difference, women were admitted.

UC offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs through its five colleges: College of Arts, College of Education, Health and Human Development, College of Engineering, College of Science, and College of Business and Law.

Since its establishment, UC has produced some notable graduates highlighted by Ernest Rutherford, known as the Father of Nuclear Physics. Other notable alumnus include Apirana Ngata, the first Maori graduate from any New Zealand university who is also in New Zealand's $50 bill.
