What does University of San Carlos stand for?

University of San Carlos (USC) is a private educational and research institution established in 1783 as the Colegio Seminario de San Carlos. In 1852, the Colegio was entrusted to the Dominican Fathers until the Vincentian Fathers took over in 1867. Since then, the institution opened its college education to all its male students.

After the split of the Colegio from the seminary in 1930, the Society of the Divine Word (Societas Verbi Divini, SVD) took over and has been administering the school since 1935. Following brief periods of closure during World War II, the school gained its university status in 1948. To date, the school is considered to be one of the biggest and most prominent university in Cebu and the Visayas and is composed of 5 campuses in different areas of Metro Cebu.

USC has seven schools catering to 57 undergraduate and 74 graduate programs that focus on Architecture, Fine Arts and Design, Liberal Arts and Sciences, Business and Economics, Education, Engineering, Healthcare Professions, and Law and Governance. It ranks 4th in the Best Universities in the Philippines, has the highest number of Commission on Higher Education (CHED) recognitions with 12 Centers of Development (COD) and 8 Centers of Excellence (COE) awards. It is granted Full Autonomous status by CHED since 2001 to present.

The Supreme Court of the Philippines Legal Education Board conferred to USC School of Law and Governance an Excellence Award as top 4 performing law school in the Bar exams from 2013 to 2017. It is also an (ISO) 9001:2015 certified Quality Management System for Institutional and Student Support Services as of September 2017

There are 22,000 Carolinian students, of which more than 200 are international students, enrolled in basic education (montessori, elementary, junior and senior high school), collegiate undergraduate and graduate programs served by about 1,100 academic faculty and staff with a teacher to student ratio of 1:20. About 600 Carolinian students are academic scholars, 200 working student scholars and 300 non-academic scholars (sports, cultural and performing arts).
USC continues its legacy of developing competent, socially responsible, and life long learner professionals. This is evident with the university’s recent feats in academics with topnotch Carolinians (students of USC) in the Bar, CPA, Engineers, Architect, Chemist, Pharmacist, and Teachers Licensure Board Examinations.
