The University of the Cordilleras (UC) was founded on June 19, 1946 by Atty. Benjamin R. Salvosa as Baguio Colleges offering courses in teacher training and liberal arts. In 1966, Baguio Colleges was converted to an educational foundation and became Baguio Colleges Foundation. The institution expanded and added programs for other fields and by 2003, UC was recognized as a university.
University of Cordilleras is home to over 15,000 students from the different parts of Region 1, Region 2, the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), as well as from neighboring provinces in Luzon. UC offers academic programs in law, accountancy, arts and sciences, business administration, criminal justice, education, engineering and architecture, hospitality and tourism management, information and computer sciences, nursing, and teacher education. Aside from its higher education programs, the university also has grade school, high school, and senior high school departments. It is also an advocate of the Cordilleran culture. Its cultural group Hapiyoh Mi is actively participating and winning in various events and competitions in and out of the country.
UC has been granted “Autonomous” status by the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd), along with accredited programs awarded by the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (PAASCU) and the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities Commission on Accreditation (PACUCOA). Three of its programs awarded with Center of Excellence by CHEDd are Information Technology, Criminology, and Teacher Education. Over the years, two bar topnotchers, Noel Neil Q. Malimban (2006) and Janet B. Abuel (1996), have been recognized while over 200 topnotchers have been successful in board exams for Criminology, Engineering, Teacher Education, Architecture, Accountancy, and Nursing.
