What does Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan stand for?


Xavier University (XU) – Ateneo de Cagayan is a private, Catholic educational institution in Cagayan de Oro City. It was founded in 1933 as the Ateneo de Cagayan. The school initially offered high school programs for locals of then named, Cagayan de Misamis. The name Xavier University was added when it gained its university status in 1958. It was done in honor of St. Francis Xavier. Currently, Xavier University is managed by the Society of Jesus.

Xavier University currently has a total of nine academic units offering undergraduate, graduate, post-graduate, and professional courses. Three are schools: Education, Business and Management, and Medicine; and, six are colleges: Agriculture, Arts and Sciences, Computer Studies, Engineering, Nursing, and Law. New programs to look for are in Interdisciplinary Studies, Early Childhood Education, Special Needs Education, Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, Information Technology, and Management Accounting. On top of these tertiary programs, XU also provides the K-12 basic education program, with the STEM, GAS, and TVL strands for Senior High School students.

As part of their efforts to maintain their ranking, Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan has a Quality Management Office to sustain the excellence and competence of the university. In 2016, the school secured a spot in the  Asian University Rankings released by the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). Additionally, many of its programs, including grade school and high school, have accreditations from the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (PAASCU).

Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan Facts:

  • Ateneo de Cagayan is the first institution to be granted university status in Mindanao. It is also the first Jesuit university in the country, 
  • Xavier University has a social development cluster that is focused on intensifying environmental protection to reduce disaster-related incidents in Northern Mindanao.
  • The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) named the university as a Center of Excellence (COE) for Agriculture and Teacher Education. CHED also named the Biology, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, English Literature, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering programs as Centers of Development (COD).
