California Institute of Technology (CalTech) is a research university in the United States. Formerly known as Throop University, it was founded in 1891 as a school for arts and crafts. It was renamed into its present name in 1920.
CalTech is organized into six primary academic divisions: Biology and Biological Engineering, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Engineering and Applied Science, Geological and Planetary Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Physics, Mathematics, and Astronomy. These divisions offer programs in the undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate levels.
Caltech participates in a significant amount of research, receiving grants from institutions such as the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), National Science Foundation, Department of Health and Human Services, etc.
