What does Columbia University stand for?


Columbia University is an independent, privately supported, nonsectarian institution of higher education founded in 1754 situated in New York City, USA. It was established as King's College by royal charter of George II of Great Britain and renamed Columbia College in 1784. The university offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as bachelor degrees, master degrees, doctorate degrees in several areas of study. 

The university is organized into 20 schools, including undergraduate schools such as Columbia College, the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science, and the School of General Studies, as well as graduate schools such as Columbia Law School, Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia Journalism School and Columbia Business School and affiliated with Barnard College for women, Union Theological Seminary and the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. 

Over the years, Columbia University has produced notable alumni which includes three US presidents, 29 foreign heads of state, 10 justices of the United States Supreme Court, 96 Nobel Laureates, 101 National Academy members and 38 living billionaires.
