What does RMIT University stand for?


RMIT University is a public university located in Melbourne, Australia. It was initially named as the Working Men's College and was established in 1887 for the purpose of bringing education to the working people of Melbourne. It gained university status in 1997 and has other campuses in Brunswick and Bundoora. RMIT also has two campuses in Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi), a center in Europe, and a representative office in Indonesia. 

RMIT offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs through its three colleges: College of Design and Social Context, College of Business, and College of Engineering, Science, and Health. 

RMIT University has been recognized as one of the top universities in the world by the QS World University Rankings. Some of its rankings being 21st in the world among universities less than 50 years old, 15th highest ranked university in Australia and 250th in the world, and 11th in the world and highest in Australia for Art and Design. 


RMIT University facts:

  • Awarded royal patronage by Queen Elizabeth II for its educational service to the Commonwealth and contribution to the war effort, and remains the only higher education institution in Australia with the right to use the prefix “Royal” and the Monarchy's coat of arms.

  • Holds affiliations with the Australian Technology Network of Universities and Open Universities Australia.
