Swinburne University of Technology was founded in 1908 and was initially known as the Eastern Suburbs Technical College. It was renamed five years later as the Swinburne Technical College, after its founder, George Swinburne, who wanted to establish a technical college to serve those who do not have access to further education. It gained university status in 1992 to become Swinburne University of Technology.
