Course Description

This course will provide you with the skills and knowledge you need to work in mechanical engineering as an Engineering Technician, Detailed Drafter or Maintenance Technician. You will learn how to carry out mechanical engineering drafting and design; analytical work involving manufacturing and fabrication techniques; understand the application of engineering principles, systems and processes; draw and design mechanical equipment; maintain mechanical systems; and work within workplace health and safety standards.


This course has 5 core units and 15 elective units. Please note that you must complete all of the core units listed below, however the elective units you study may differ between TAFE colleges. At orientation you will be provided with course information by your college which identifies the elective units you will be enrolled into.

The core units are as follows:

  • MEM16006A Organise and communicate information
  • MEM16008A Interact with computing technology
  • MEM30007A Select common engineering materials


  • An IELTS score (academic) of 5.5 with no band score less than 5.0 or equivalent is required.

  • Year 12 with passes in English and Maths is required for entry into this course.
