What does The University of Iowa stand for?

The University of Iowa (UI) is a public university in Iowa, United States. The university was established in 1847 and is the oldest higher education institution in the state. Located in Iowa City, the Main Campus is divided into west and east sides, as the Iowa River cuts through its land area that spans 1,880 acres. Providing higher education for more than 170 years, the University of Iowa strives to promote research and innovation, both in the sciences and arts, through excellent professors, state-of-the-art facilities, and a school community that embraces and celebrates diversity.

The University of Iowa has 10 college units, offering a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs, including online and distance education courses. According to the US News Rankings, the most common programs in the university include Business, Recreation and Fitness Studies, Social Sciences, Engineering, and Communication. UI is also known for its health care programs; it has two affiliate hospitals, the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and the Stead Family Children's Hospital.

  • The Iowa Hawkeyes are UI's athletic teams who play in Division I of the NCAA. The university mascot is named Herky the Hawk.
  • The university is known for its creative writing program, also called the Iowa Writer's Workshop. This is a graduate-level program that leads to a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in English. 
  • The University of Iowa has been a pioneer for a number of events in history. Aside from being the first university in Iowa, it was the first public university in the US to give equal admission opportunities for men and women regardless of race. Its medical school founded in 1870 was the first coeducational medical school in the country. Then, a hundred years later, it was also the first academic institution to officially recognize an LGBT student organization, the Gay Liberation Front. Additionally, its MFA degree is a first in the country.
