Engineering Series: Industrial Engineering
What is Industrial Engineering?
As one of the many branches of engineering, Industrial Engineering applies science, mathematics, and engineering methods towards one main goal—efficiency. It is concerned with the analysis, design, and optimization of complex processes, systems, or organizations to improve quality and productivity.
How long is this course?
The Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering usually takes 5 years to complete. This, however, may be reduced to 4 years depending if the school you’re planning to enroll follows the trimestral academic calendar.
To become a professional Industrial Engineer, a graduate from this course must past first the Industrial Engineering Certifications Exams which are conducted by the Industrial Engineering Certification Board (IECB).
These two Industrial Engineering Certification Examinations are the Certified Industrial Engineering Examination (CIE Exam) and the Professional Industrial Engineering Examination (PIE Exam).
What traits and skill sets would you need?
Aside having from loads of mathematics and scientific abilities, here are some of the important qualities that make a good industrial engineer:
-
- Critical thinking – since this profession focuses primarily on making things more efficient, your critical thinking abilities will help you understand complex systems and ideas to solve problems.
- Creativity – as you continuously work on improving things, expect to design a lot of programs in this course.
- Communication skills – you’ll need to have a strong skill in communication, especially when dealing with a number of people.
- Computer and graphical skills – as you work on creating programs and systems, you need to have the ability to transform your ideas into design or graphical representations that people will understand.
What subjects would you expect from this?
Along with the courses in basic engineering science, statistics, math, chemistry, physics, and communication, here are some of the key courses under the BS Industrial Engineering that you’re going to take, based on guidelines set by CHED starting on A.Y. 2018-2019:
- Statistical Analysis for Industrial Engineering
- Ergonomics
- Work Study and Measurement
- Quality Management Systems
- Industrial Organization and Management
- Operations Management
- Supply Chain Management
- Operations Research
- Systems Engineering
Expect that you’ll be also studying various concepts in production processes, as well as designing optimal systems for manufacturing, performance evaluations, and a lot more.
What career can you pursue with an Industrial Engineering degree?
Because BSIE covers broader topics unlike the other more specific engineering fields, graduates from this course can work in so many fields and industries. Here are some of the careers that you can take:
- Project Manager/Engineer
- Process Developer
- Information Analyst
- Systems Design Engineer
- Maintenance Engineer
- Ergonomist
- Quality Control Supervisor
- Productivity Consultant
- Training Specialist
- Operations Research Engineer
- Strategic Planner
- Sales Engineer
- Tooling Engineer
- Project Supervisor
