St. Paul University Surigao (SPUS) is a private Catholic university in Surigao City. The growth of the school began in 1906 when the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart (Dutch Fathers) took over the administration of the Cartilla or Doctrina School in Surigao. Simultaneous with the creation of the parish of Surigao, the Dutch Fathers developed the Cartilla (also the then Escuela Catolica de San Nicolas) into a parochial school and renamed it San Nicolas School. In 1926, the administration was turned over to the Congregation of the St. Paul of Chartres. Through the years, the school eventually grew in size, in student population, and in program offerings. In 2000, the school’s name was officially changed into St. Paul University Surigao. Currently, SPUS has two campuses in the province: San Nicolas (main campus) and Barangay Luna.
