What does Mindanao University of Science and Technology - Main stand for?

Mindanao University of Science and Technology (MUST), presently known as the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP), is a semi-government state university based in Mindanao. The main campus is located in Cagayan de Oro, with satellite schools in Claveria, Jasaan, Panaon, and Oroquieta.

It was first established in 1927 as the Misamis Oriental Trade School. The school had several name changes since 1952, and in 2009 it was renamed to the Mindanao University of Science and Technology. By virtue of Republic Act 10919 on August 16, 2016, it is now called the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines. 

Mindanao University of Science and Technology is mandated to “provide advanced education, higher technological, professional instruction and advanced instruction in mathematics, science, technology, engineering, and advanced research and extension work in human resource development in critical skills and competencies required for global competitiveness.”

Mindanao University of Science and Technology has 5 colleges: the College of Engineering and Architecture, the College of Information Technology and Computing, the College of Science and Mathematics, the College of Science and Technology Education, and the College of Technology. MUST offers both Masters and Doctorate programs. The school is also K to 12-ready. 

Mindanao University of Science and Technology is, as well, a research institution and has several priority areas. These are: 

• Advance Science for basic and applied research in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Engineering, Architecture, and Marine Aquatic Research
• Environment, Life Science/Biology, Health, Nutrition, Food Safety and Food Security
• Information Technology, Automation and Control, Material Science, Computer Science, Nanotechnology
• Education, Policy Studies, Socio-Economics, Demographics, Ethnographic, and Linguistics Studies
• Research Priority Areas that address pressing problems in disaster risks, climate change, gender and development, poverty alleviation

• In combination with Misamis Oriental State College of Agriculture and Technology (MOSCAT), Mindanao University of Science and Technology makes up the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines
• It enjoys 6 accreditation statuses, given by the Accrediting Agency of Chartered Colleges and Universities in the Philippines (AACCUP)
• MUST has several research priorities to improve human life and address environmental problems
