Ateneo de Zamboanga University (AdZU) is a private, Catholic university in Zamboanga City. It was founded in 1912 was formerly known as Escuela Catolica. Four years later, it was renamed as Ateneo de Zamboanga. It is the second oldest Jesuit school in the Philippines and the second Jesuit school to be named Ateneo. It became a college in 1952 and gained university status in 1952.
AdZU offers undergraduate and graduate programs through the following academic units: School of Education, School of Liberal Arts, School of Management and Accountancy, College of Science and Information Technology, College of Nursing, College of Law, and School of Medicine. It also has a Senior High School department providing the HUMSS, ABM, STEM, and ICT strands.
Ateneo de Zamboanga has been validated as an institution that provides quality education through accreditations and recognition by various organizations. A number of its programs are accredited by the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges, and Universities (PAASCU), like Accountancy, Business, Teacher Education, Nursing, and Arts and Sciences. It is also one off of the few higher education institutions in the country, and the only one in Western Mindanao, to be granted a Full Autonomous status by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).
